I recently met 13-year-old Jackson Fall at WordCamp Dallas. Jackson might be young, but he doesn’t think like a kid when it comes to technology, business, and social media.
He not only has a video blog / podcast (at LivingDigitally.tv), but he’s also a freelance graphic and web designer. When I asked if he was going to start a business, he confidently answered “I have a business.”
Smart and driven, Jackson also told me that he is inspired by people like Cali Lewis, he loves Diggnation, and would like to work for a company like internet television network Revision3.
Here’s the short video interview, which includes his impromptu application to Revision3:
For the 3rd episode of The Social Nerdia Show! I interviewed Cameron Strang, founder and CEO of RELEVANT Magazine, a magazine that has become a leading voice among 18-34 year old, faith motivated individuals.
I have been a big fan of Relevant for many years so it was more than awesome to chat with Cameron to learn more about him and the company. You can stream the conversation on the BTR player below or download the podcast on iTunes, and read some of my thoughts below.
When asked about why he started the magazine, Cameron said that he wanted “to make a difference” and that at the time ”there was no magazine that blended life issues, faith, and culture.” The foundation of it all was Relevant Media Group, which still provides media and web consulting services, followed by the release of relevantmagazine.com, and finally the first issue of RELEVANT Magazine in 2003. Cameron and Relevant have been able to create creative, fun and thought-provoking media that has spread through word of mouth, a strong online community, and grassroot efforts. (more…)
The Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival is the largest gathering of ad professionals and the home of the most prestigious annual advertising awards. At this year’s event, visitors have been able to experience an intelligent, multi-user “Touchwall” that will serve as an information hub for the event. And what a cool info hub they’ll be able to play with!
Schematic, a WPP Digital company, announced that its propietary 12-foot long by 5-foot high interactive “Touchwall” will allow people to get instant access to the complete festival program, 3D maps of the event and local area, and even search capabilities so attendees can contact each other and schedule meetings.
But that’s not all. The “Touchwall” experience begins when attendees place their badge against it. An equipped RFID reader authenticates the badge and opens up a personalized workspace. Because the wall is so large, multiple people can use it side by side. They can exchange business cards, tell marketing jokes, and actually laugh out loud as they enjoy the wall’s greatness. No emoticons necessary. (more…)
Version 0.3 of Seesmic Desktop, the Adobe Air client for Facebook and Twitter, has just been released andshould auto-update. In addition to nice user interface improvements (like a “cancel” button to erase messages), here’s a summary of what’s new:

Netvibes is trying to learn a few moves from the Amazon playbook by analyzing the widgets you already have and comparing them to others you might also appreciate. The company is calling it “Talk to Me” and it is basically a new feature that recommends widgets:
“Netvibes Talk to Me is the first widget recommendation and distribution engine that performs on-going, intelligent analyses of users’ widget behavior and the context in which widgets are used to deliver individually personalized and perfectly relevant widget recommendations.”

If you are on Netvibes and are yet to receive recommendations, you should be getting them by the end of the week. Keep in mind that all recommendation engines have their faults. So, if you don’t like one of the recommendations simply close it and kiss it good-bye. The good news is that Netvibes recommendations get better as you accept or reject them.

But what if you have so many widgets that you feel like it’s all getting cluttered? Netvibes Labs has a project called Spring Cleaning, which displays widgets you might not need anymore. (more…)
Jennifer Leggio is the director of strategic communications for Fortinet, as well as a regular blogger on ZDNet and co-host of the Quick-n-Dirty show on blogtalkradio. Having spent more than 15 years in the communications industry, she has a good grasp on technology, network security, and digital media.
Jennifer also played an accidental role in the naming of this web site (a typo she wrote basically helped inspire the name “Social Nerdia“). Please follow Jennifer aka Mediaphyter on Twitter and make sure to pay attention to any thought-provoking typos.
1. How do you balance your life while working at Fortinet, blogging for ZDNet, and contributing to other projects?
It’s tough. I sacrifice a lot of my personal life. While Fortinet is flexible and understanding of my “double life,” my job there is my first and foremost priority, and it has both its demands and rewards. I need to write at least two to three times per week for ZDNet and I have pretty high standards for what I post on the blog. I don’t like to do little blurbs that just riff on other people’s research. I like to do my own research. It’s challenging but worth it. I just need to find a way to work a little more “me” time into the equation and I’ll be satisfied.
2. You write about “social business”. Do you think there’s a place for every company (products/services, B2C/B2B, etc.) in the social web?
Every company? That might be a stretch. (more…)
The Social Nerdia Show! Episode #2 is now available for streaming on blogtalkradio (and at the bottom of this post) as well as a podcast on iTunes.
In this episode, @jestebanc and @somerlea talk about the latest Social Nerdia blog posts, recent Tech News (Facebook dethroning MySpace, Bing making gains, online video stats, and email marketing forecasts), and Not-So Tech / Pop Culture News (Letterman’s Palin comments, Kate Gosselin spanks her kids, CK inappropriateness, and an angry and perhaps lost in space Michael Jackson).
The show also delves into the awesomness of free cell phones, nasty female commercials, tweeting stalkers, turtles in the middle of the highway, @common_squirrel, “Captain Obvious” of the media, Hammer Time, grandmas on Facebook, upcoming movie releases, and the Randomized Topic of the Day (which was.. who would’ve guessed? Twitter!), sponsored by: “Spreadsheet“.
Thanks for tuning in!
